U.S. Yield Curve Steepens as Mnuchin Considers Longer-Term Bonds

Image
(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. yield curve steepened after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the government is seriously considering extending its debt profile well beyond the current three-decade maximum. The gap between five- and 30-year Treasury yields widened to 59 basis points, from 56 basis points just before the news broke late Wednesday. The ultra-long bond’s rate climbed to 1.97%, reversing a decline that had driven it to a record low of 1.90% earlier in the day.The Treasury Department revealed two weeks ago that it was yet again mulling 50- and 100-year bonds, which would let the government lock in historically low rates for longer. “If the conditions are right, then I would anticipate we’ll take advantage of long-term borrowing and execute on that,” Mnuchin said Wednesday in a Bloomberg News interview in Washington.“There was no need for Mnuchin to make remarks that could prompt selling of Treasuries,” said Hidehiro Joke, a bond strategist at Mizuho Securities Co. in Tokyo. “He...

Tesla heads down new road with car insurance in California

Image
Tesla owners in California can now buy insurance from the electric car company in what may be the first step toward the unconventional automaker providing coverage for a fleet of driverless taxis. The expansion announced Wednesday comes four months after Tesla CEO Elon Musk told analysts the company would branch into insuring its own cars for people who buy or lease them. Musk believes Tesla has learned so much about its cars that it will be able to offer rates 20% to 30% below those offered by traditional insurers. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2L4ScvT via IFTTT

Hurricane Dorian Slips Past Puerto Rico, Heads to Florida

Image
(Bloomberg) -- After slipping past Puerto Rico, Hurricane Dorian is heading with gathering force toward Florida’s east coast where it may bring 115 mile-per-hour winds and drenching rain when it hits there sometime early next week.Dorian is set to be the first major hurricane to slam into Florida’s east coast in 15 years. It reached St. Croix and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, and is expected to stay over the water, gaining strength in its northwest march toward Florida. While Puerto Rico’s east end saw heavy rain from the storm’s outer bands, the main part of the island remained largely unaffected, easing concern Dorian might further devastate an island still recovering from Hurricane Maria’s 155 mph winds in 2017. Now, Florida is in Dorian’s crosshairs, spurring concern from residents, vacationers and citrus farmers.“Really anybody from Miami to Myrtle Beach has to be on guard for this,” said Jake So...
